LIVELIHOOD-BASED ADAPTATION STRATEGIES

Definition

The “Livelihoods Based Coping Strategies” module is used to better understand the long-term coping capacity of households.

Stress

The strategies indicate a reduced ability to cope with future shocks due to a current reduction in resources or an increase in debt.

Crisis

The strategies are often associated with the direct reduction of future productivity.

Umergency

Strategies also affect future productivity but are harder to book or more dramatic in nature than crisis strategies.

Justification

While the SCA and rCSI are proxies for the current food security situation and only encompass behaviors related to

food, livelihoods-based coping strategies help assess longer-term household coping and productive capacities and their future impact.

Households are classified according to the severity associated with the strategies applied: the higher the phase, the more serious the negative consequences in the long term.
